Boerne District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Boerne Independent School District follows the Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge (TEKS) curricular guidelines. The TEKS lays out a progression by which students develop knowledge in each core subject year by year. Critical thinking skills are built in at all levels so that students are engaged in thinking about what they are learning. The district schools provide kids with a safe, secure place in which to learn, develop, and achieve their highest potential. A wide variety of extracurricular programming, including clubs and sports, supplement the strong academic programs offered in both districts and provide students with further opportunities to learn and grow.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Boerne District Curriculum

The elementary math curriculum in Boerne Independent School District includes an introduction to concepts in geometry. Students sketch, describe, and classify triangles based on their features. The same skills are used with regard to quadrilaterals. Using a protractor, learners develop the ability to measure angles as well as describe them as right, obtuse, or acute. Area is a concept students learn to understand as well. Students find the area of various geometric and real-world figures. The concepts of translation, reflection, and rotation are also studied.

They also gain an understanding of the working of the government and the political systems throughout the United States. Chalk Talk: Helping the Dyslexic Child

When a child has dyslexia they may need some assistance in understanding what they read. Parents can them build tools that they can try in various situations. There may not be one best method, but there are many that can be tried. First, parents can model for the child how to substitute a word when they come to one they are not familiar with, or cannot comprehend. Parents can show how to picture the idea with the new word and see if it makes sense. If it does not work, they can try another. Graphic organizers can also be used to help a child organize what they are learning. There are many to choose from and by talking to a teacher, the parent can help find one that works the best. For other ideas, keep communications open with the school to see what other assistance they can suggest.
