Chalk Talk: Rolling Applications

Rolling applications are a type of non-restricted college application. The difference between Rolling and Regular Decision has to do with when students can apply and how soon they’ll hear back. With Regular Decision, students usually don’t hear a decision until several weeks, maybe months, after the deadline. Rolling applications are different. First off, they don’t really have a deadline. The college may start accepting applications quite early, sometimes October or even earlier. Students are free to apply at any point during that time until applications close, which is usually quite late, maybe March or even later. The great thing about Rolling applications is that instead of making students wait until the reading period is over, colleges tend to respond within just a few weeks. Schools that offer Rolling applications tend not to be the most selective, but they also don’t tend to be the least; they usually fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, and the fact that they offer an application type that exists solely to benefit students speaks volumes as to their commitment to student success.
