Chalk Talk: What Do Administrative Assistants Do?
Administrative assistants, or secretaries, may not be teachers, but they play an important role in keeping their school organized. They are responsible for keeping track of master attendance, making announcements over the PA system, collecting notes from parents, answering phone calls and e-mails, mailing and distributing letters and forms, organizing files, etc. Perhaps most importantly, administrative assistants communicate with parents often. They field calls from parents when they are calling their child in sick, call parents to find out why students are not in school if no note was sent, and alert parents to minor issues such as dress code violations or accidents. Administrative assistants also need to be welcoming towards parents when they come to pick up their children from school; they are usually the first people parents see when they walk in the school .
