Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bonham District Curriculum

The students at Bonham Independent School District discover World History through the Social Studies curriculum. This subject introduces students to the important time period of human history. This includes the study of the Neolithic, or agricultural, Revolution to the present time. It also develops a sense of civilizations throughout history, which can tie each of the students from today to those around the world. Students are able to use this knowledge as a backdrop to understand and discuss current events.

The English curriculum at Bonham Independent School District introduces the students to the world of literature. This includes the background of some of the great works. By studying these works, the students become stronger writers and ties literature to other subject areas. While studying Shakespeare, for example, the students may learn about the Elizabethan Era as well as the history of the Globe Theatre. Combining these topics together show students how different topics can work together to help improve the understanding of both.

Chalk Talk: What Do Administrative Assistants Do?

Administrative assistants, or secretaries, may not be teachers, but they play an important role in keeping their school organized. They are responsible for keeping track of master attendance, making announcements over the PA system, collecting notes from parents, answering phone calls and e-mails, mailing and distributing letters and forms, organizing files, etc. Perhaps most importantly, administrative assistants communicate with parents often. They field calls from parents when they are calling their child in sick, call parents to find out why students are not in school if no note was sent, and alert parents to minor issues such as dress code violations or accidents. Administrative assistants also need to be welcoming towards parents when they come to pick up their children from school; they are usually the first people parents see when they walk in the school .
