Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Boone District Curriculum
The Common Core Standards provide the framework for math and literacy learning at all levels of school. It is progressively designed, focusing on fewer topics at greater depth and carrying through the focus from year to year. Many of the learning expectations are also applied in subjects like Science and Social Studies, as well.
Students receive a well-balanced education at all grade levels. Boone Community School District also emphasizes STEM curriculum in the middle school grades. STEM - the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - has typically been taught as individual subjects. The district expands that structure by incorporating each into a curriculum that is directed by discovery, problem solving, and collaboration. The focus changes from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered program that teaches independent innovation. STEM education is designed to teach to the “whole” student to make them more successful members of society.

Chalk Talk: The STEM Subjects
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These disciplines are most recognized in higher education and more and more recently, educators are trying to emphasize the importance of the subject areas in grades kindergarten through twelve. Recent reports have shown that students across the nation are falling behind in STEM disciplines. Students are also showing less interest in the STEM subjects, leading to a significant decline in the number of college students choosing majors in science or technology related fields. More than likely your child enjoys one of these subject areas. Each involves discovery, creativity and analysis. Does your child like to build? Always seems to have an idea of a design or creation they want to make happen? Does math come easy to your child? Does your child look at technology as more than video games, a way to communicate with friends or finding research for a report?
