Davis School District is moving towards implementation of the Utah Core Standards, which are derived from the Common Core State Standards in English and Mathematics, as a set of educational standards designed to make students career and college ready. The Common Core is based on the best educational research and it is substantive and clear. Using the Davis Essential Skills and Knowledge (DESK) Program to set goals for each grade, teachers are focusing on making sure their students meet these standards, at every level.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bountiful District Curriculum
Literacy and English Language Arts teaching is integrated throughout the school experience. Students begin learning to read in kindergarten, focusing on the phonetic elements of reading and developing fluency and a broader vocabulary. Students are encouraged to read widely, both from fictional and from nonfictional sources, but always with texts that are appropriate to their current reading level. This enables students to build the skills they need gradually.
By third grade, students are applying their reading skills to other subjects; they begin to read informational texts in Social Studies and Science which help them understand more about the world, while still reading a variety of literary and informational texts in the English Language Arts context. By junior high and high school, students split their time building writing and reading skills between their English and reading courses, where they work with literary texts and are explicitly taught about writing and analytic techniques.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Literacy Tutors
By third grade, and especially in middle and high school, reading and writing aren’t just skills necessary for those subjects. Instead, they are the core of the skills students need to succeed in all subject areas: to read textbooks in Social Studies and Science, to follow directions in Math, and to master skills in the arts, foreign languages, and music. Working with a tutor on your writing and reading skills can be a great way to improve a student’s grades in all subjects, and make sure that your student is meeting their full potential throughout their educational career.
