Within these standards, Branford schools have adopted Smarter Balanced Assessments. This philosophy of assessing students seeks to go beyond the standard multiple choice questions of the past. This way of questioning provides students with opportunities for extended responses and the incorporation of technology to allow students to apply critical thinking. They are challenged to apply their content to real world scenarios to develop a deeper understanding.
In English Language Arts, the focus is on literacy, writing, and speaking skills. It also seeks to teach critical thinking and analytical skills starting from the foundations of kindergarten and building through graduation. Mathematics and Science, as well challenge students to delve deeper in understanding. Again, critical thinking and problem solving abilities are important. Fewer topics are covered each year to give teachers and students the time to not just use and learn, but gain a higher understanding of key procedures and concepts.

Keeping Informed: Recent Branford Educational News
- Parents as Teachers - The Parents as Teachers program is designed to bring together parents of infants through pre-K age children to come together and learn how to engage their children and support their development. It also provides for social interaction for both the parents and the children.
- Virtual High School - Highly motivated and self-disciplined students who want a unique and different learning experience have the option to participate in the Branford Virtual High School. This all online high school incorporates independent learning experiences, chances to learn at an international point of view, and other course they may not otherwise we able to take.
- Youngsters Go Green - Second grade students at a local elementary school participated in Earth day but helping clean up the campus. They also learned about recycling and going green in a week long, school-wide project.

It’s clear that technology in every form is here to stay, and more advancement is on the way. Technology will continue to play a critical role in the global economy and we do not want our next generation taking a backseat. We need our children to become the highly paid, skilled engineers that will be needed. We need them to take medicine into the next era and design advancements that will reduce global warming and restore the global balance. We cannot let our children believe that math and science is too hard for them and should be left to the really smart kids.
