Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Breaux Bridge District Curriculum

The public schools in the St. Martin Parish School District follow the state mandated Common Core Standards. Common Core provides set expectations for curriculum particularly in the area of Mathematics and English and Language Arts. In Mathematics, students focus in on becoming fluent in core math subjects including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and proportional reasoning. Students are encouraged to apply what they have learned to solve new problems.

In English and Language Arts, students learn to read and write and speak in correct English. Students learn to write informational evidence based assignments in addition to creative writing. Reading material includes both great literature and informational text and students are taught how to read for information and evidence. Skills such as critical analysis and research are emphasized. Standards for English literacy are used in all academic and technology courses so that students have broad critical reading skills.

Keeping Informed: Recent Breaux Bridge Educational News

  • Virtual Learning Program - The St. Martin Parish School District recently announced the expansion of their Virtual Learning Program. The virtual program is now an alternative schooling option for students in grades 1-12. It is open to all students and provides access to online courses provided by certified instructors.
  • 100th Day Celebration - The Parks Primary School which is part of the St. Martin Parish School District recently took time to celebrate the 100th Day of School. The annual event is a fun way to mark a midpoint in the school year. Parks Primary School is located in Parks, Louisiana.
  • Pillowcase Project - Members of the third grade class at St. Martinville Primary recently participated in a project run by the American Red Cross known as the Pillow Project. The Pillow Project is a nationwide program that helps students and their families learn about disaster preparedness in a fun and engaging way. Each student creates a personal emergency supply kit in a pillowcase that they personalize in their own way.

Chalk Talk: Fun with Music

Sphinx Kids is a website about classical music and contributions made by minorities to the world of music in this country. Students can click on interactive games to learn about instruments, rhythm, composers, and orchestras. There are match games such as one where you match instruments to sounds, and an interactive activity where students can create their own virtual rhythm band. The site also contains a gallery of minority composers which provides access to information about each composer, photos and listening opportunities to hear a tidbit of music from each composer. Sphinx Kids was created by Sphinx Organization with assistance from the New York Philharmonic. The Sphinx Organization is dedicated to bringing classical music to schools on a nationwide basis.
