Brighton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Schools within Brighton use the Ontario Curriculum as the general guidelines for instruction and assessment in all subjects. The curriculum has developed around core academic subjects like Math, Science, History, International Languages, and English. Beyond the foundation that these students develop in these subjects, there are also a range of specialized fields like Environmental Education and High Skills Technology subjects which students will be able to explore. The curriculum is both standards-based and student-centered in its focus on academic knowledge combined with opportunities for students to engage their curiosity in enrichment subjects.
We currently cover the following Brighton-area school districts: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brighton District Curriculum
Within the academic subjects, student learning is planned so that in the elementary years fundamentals are covered and students have the basis for the deeper analytic work in secondary school. For example, in Math students learn about numeracy and operations, measurement and shapes, and learn how to read graphs and charts. They learn how to work with quantitative data and how to represent it on graphs, scatterplots, or charts. This prepares them to be ready for Algebra, Geometry and Statistics in high school.
Similarly in English, the fundamentals of literacy and communication are taught and in high school students do much more sophisticated analysis and critical writing. The reading curriculum focuses on the strategies students use before, during, and after they read. Before reading, students are taught to think about any prior knowledge they have, while they read students are taught to ask themselves if they are understanding words and meanings, and after reading students ask themselves how the author did achieving their purpose.

Chalk Talk: How Can a Tutor Help My Child?
There are many different areas of academics with which a tutor is able to help a student. Tutors can provide the individualized instruction which is often necessary for a student who is having difficulty understanding a complex subject. For students who are pursuing advanced work, having the support of an academic professional to help guide critical thinking can enhance learning greatly. Additionally, during the periods in which a student is researching or preparing applications for enrichment programs or college, a tutor can provide many supports with essay writing and connecting with interesting post-secondary opportunities. As all students are individual, their individual needs will differ, and a tutor is able to provide the academic supports that are suited to their learning goals.
