Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookfield District Curriculum
The curriculum emphasizes clear expectations for all students, a focus on critical thinking, and a focus on real-world applications of learning. In humanities classes, students begin with basic concepts like grammar rules and comprehension and later focus on critical reading of complex nonfiction pieces and critical thinking skills and learn how to research topics and use evidence to support their theses. They are taught how to edit and revise their work and ways to create final presentations.
In mathematics and science classes, the focus is on key concepts and real-world applications of lessons such as motion and forces and carrying out investigations and investigating engineering problems. Though students are supported, they are also held to high standards which stress character development, learning accountability, demonstrating integrity, learning the importance of ethical citizenship, displaying respectful relationships, and exhibiting positive leadership and collaboration skills.

Chalk Talk: AP Exams
Advanced Placement (AP) exams are given to students who’ve completed an AP class. These are college-level classes offered in high school. Most college are looking for a score of a 4 or 5 on an AP, which is the highest possible score. If a student scores a 3 or higher on 3 different APs, s/he becomes an AP scholar, which may impress a college. The reason students take AP exams is that some colleges will give credit for them so that students don’t have to take that class in college. Not every college gives credit, and some will simply move the student into a higher level class. But for colleges that do, students might be able to enter college with some credits already under their belts.
