Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookhaven District Curriculum

Mathematics is important to all students and at Brookhaven School Districts the students are introduced to this subject in many ways. EnVision Math, by Pearson, is used by Brookhaven schools to meet the Standards. They also use the computer program “Math for the Real World” to help reinforce the lessons. As the students enter junior high and high school these materials allow them to continue learning in their classes in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Trigonometry.

The Language Arts program is a well-rounded topic at Brookhaven Schools. The curriculum they follow is directed by “Shurley English” which helps build a love of the English language through traditional and innovated methods. The students are able to learn about parts of speech, punctuation, clauses and so much more. In high school the students are also introduced to a variety of literature from “Where the Red Fern Grows to “The Crucible.”

Chalk Talk: How to Help Children With Math

Many parents become flustered when it comes to helping their children with math. To help the child not to feel frustrated also, take a deep breath and try some of these tips. First, a daily math assignment book is a good way for the child and the parent to stay on top of the expectations of the teacher. When checking this book, ask the child about their previous homework and see if there are areas that need attention. If a parent is unsure of a math assignment, talk with the teacher for help that they may give. If the child still needs aid, check to see if there is an after school tutor that the child can see. Math does not need to be a scary subject, just follow these few tips.
