Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookville District Curriculum

Brookville’s world languages curriculum helps middle school leaners acquire the essential skills needed to communicate in a language other than English. Students work on reading and writing skills, including reading basic texts, and writing simple passages with common words and phrases. Teachers help students on spelling and word usage to ensure students’ writings are accurate and understandable. Students take part in spoken conversations with their peers in small group and one-on-one situations.

Students participate in a social studies curriculum that helps them develop an appreciation of history and how it impacts today’s events. Students explore historical events and analyze how they changed the world for the better or worse. Learners examine both primary and secondary resources to develop an accurate picture of how historical events played out. The elementary school social studies curriculum looks specifically at the development of the New World. Learners identify the influences of Europe and Africa on New World Settlements by examining linguistic, social, and religious influences from across the Atlantic.

Chalk Talk: Why Extracurricular Activities Are Important

Extracurricular activities have long been an integral component of education. While what happens in the classroom should remain a student’s focus, what they are able to do before and after school can greatly impact their learning. Children that participate in activities learn important skills like time management and prioritizing tasks. Extracurricular activities likewise afford students the opportunity to explore a wide range of interests outside of school. There are social benefits as well. Children can interact with kids from other classes and grades and find positive adult role models in their coaches and club sponsors. Being involved in activities is also important for students on their college and job applications. Participation in various activities is attractive to colleges and employers because it shows that students are well rounded and have the ability to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously.
