Chalk Talk: Should Physical Education Classes Be Mandatory?
Physical education may not always be a student’s favorite class but there are some undeniable benefits to making these classes mandatory. First, students get the chance to play different sports and find the one that interests them the most. P.E. classes may also help students discover what they don’t like, which is also a good thing. This means that students can learn self-discipline and how to perform their best in situations that they wouldn’t normally put themselves in voluntarily. This is an important skill that will be used outside of the classroom as well. P.E. classes also provide an environment with healthy competition for students with both others and themselves. It is also true that students learn team skills and release excess energy that could otherwise interfere with concentration in the classroom. Unfortunately, for many students, P.E. is the only time that they get to move around and exercise. For this reason and the others mentioned above, mandatory physical education classes can provide a great service to students.
