Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brownsburg District Curriculum

The Common Core Standards, used throughout the state in Math and English Language Arts, provide key standards for learning that students should meet each year. Both subjects are taught so that their applicability in other subjects is evident to the student. The curriculum for each also focuses on key topics and deepens students knowledge yearly.

American Sign Language, East Asian, or Modern European languages are all taught in the Brownsburg School District. Conversational skills are emphasized, along with grammar and writing skills and comparisons between students’ culture and the cultures studied. Business and Information Technology courses are also offered in Brownsburg schools. Financial responsibility, business ethics and management, and the outreach of technology in a global world are all areas in which students’ knowledge will increase. For those who enjoy the artistic side of technology, there are also programming, computer graphics and illustration classes.

Chalk Talk: Should Physical Education Classes Be Mandatory?

Physical education may not always be a student’s favorite class but there are some undeniable benefits to making these classes mandatory. First, students get the chance to play different sports and find the one that interests them the most. P.E. classes may also help students discover what they don’t like, which is also a good thing. This means that students can learn self-discipline and how to perform their best in situations that they wouldn’t normally put themselves in voluntarily. This is an important skill that will be used outside of the classroom as well. P.E. classes also provide an environment with healthy competition for students with both others and themselves. It is also true that students learn team skills and release excess energy that could otherwise interfere with concentration in the classroom. Unfortunately, for many students, P.E. is the only time that they get to move around and exercise. For this reason and the others mentioned above, mandatory physical education classes can provide a great service to students.
