Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brownsville District Curriculum
The Haywood County Schools mathematics curriculum includes the use of formulas. They go from abstract concepts to more concrete while they use graphs, analyzing, numeric and verbal skills. The students begin by learning how to number each item in a set. They then learn how to plug numbers in simple formulas. These skills increase in complexity as the students progress through school. The study of formulas can help the students become better problem-solvers throughout their lives.
The Language Arts curriculum at Haywood County Schools includes the study of a variety of literature. This includes myths, letters, speeches as well as poetry, plays and short stories. In addition, the school uses literature to show students history in a different format. The students read writings from Native Americans, Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy plus much more. Chalk Talk: Relaxation Ideas
When working on homework it is easy for children to become overwhelmed and stressed. When this occurs they should be encouraged to step away from their work for ten minutes and go for a walk. The fresh air will allow them to clear their thoughts and when they return they can face their work refreshed. Another idea is to breathe deeply for a few minutes. This also works in the classroom when a child becomes nervous before a test. Spending a few minutes petting or playing with a pet or reading a book are also ways to help the child to relax before they sit down to finish their work for the night. Finally, if the child has a hobby that they enjoy working on, allow them 10-15 minutes to work on this. The main idea is to take a break from what they are working on so they can come back to it afterwards with a new outlook.
