Elementary English Language Arts learning develops reading, speaking, listening and language skills toward more complex understanding and usage. Informational themes and short narratives within literary texts are used for learning and within writing development, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate analysis.

Chalk Talk: Understanding Common Core State Standards
By now, you’ve noticed your child bringing home textbooks, books, notes and assignments that look nothing like they used to or how you learned as a student. The Common Core State Standards are certainly a different way of learning but one that is meant to be more useful in the day-to-day world of your child. Math concepts, reading and writing, geography and the environment are taught so students will be able to apply their classroom learning to outside of the classroom. These are really more performance tasks. Students are expected to “perform” certain skills at each grade level. But those “skills” or work may seem foreign to you. You can still help them, don’t worry. Teachers, school and district websites and the Common Core website have resources for parents – standards explanations, textbook and book accompaniments, extra practice problems – that will give you the information you need to help your student.
