Buda District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Hays Consolidated Independent School District follows the curriculum set forth by the Texas Education Agency which is known as the TEKS, or Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge curriculum. The State Board of Education collaborates with educators, parents, business and industry representatives in each subject area to lay out a series of learning objectives that will prepare students for their next steps in the subject, at college, or in their career. Each subject area framework calls upon students to master the fundamentals and then begin to apply their knowledge to critical thinking tasks, such as analysis or logical reasoning, within the subject.

We currently cover the following Buda-area school district: Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Buda District Curriculum

The Science curriculum includes biology, physical science, earth and environmental science, and there is an increasing emphasis on engineering concepts. In biology, students learn about cells and the specialized parts that perform specific functions. They are able to investigate cellular processes, such as homeostasis, energy conversions, and transport of molecules. Students also learn about the roles of DNA, RNA, and environmental factors in cell differentiation and what can occur when mutations exist.

The English Language Arts and Reading curriculum at Hays Consolidated Independent School District includes the study of literary classics. The students are expected to understand, make inferences about and draw conclusions from the structure and elements of various literary genre including fiction, poetry, drama, and film. They are also expected to identify themes and be able to describe how the author develops the theme in their work. To do this, their understanding of literary devices like foreshadowing or symbolism are called upon.

Chalk Talk: College Applications: The Personal Statement

Competition to get into college is difficult, so many colleges are paying close attention to a student’s personal statement. This is a topic that the student should know better than anyone else, however, it can also be the most difficult to write about. Students should use words that are concise and focused. They should limit their use of words such as very, a lot, really, or maybe. With this in mind, the personal statement should sound as if a person wrote it, not a robot. The words should come from the student’s heart. Finally, the student needs to remember to draft their statement before committing it to the application. Revision can make the difference between applicants’ acceptance.
