Burbank District and Curriculum
curriculum is intended to prepare students for their future in a global society by engaging all students in high quality, research-based instruction based on best practices, enabling them to become proficient readers, thinkers, and learners in all content areas. The curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core Standards which are nationally benchmarked standards intended to equally equip students for post-secondary education.
We currently cover the following Burbank-area school districts: Burbank School District 111 and Reavis High School District 220.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burbank District Curriculum
The school hopes to create knowledgeable students who understand and apply a core body of knowledge and skills across the curriculum and take responsibility for their own learning. Students are taught to read for comprehension and synthesis, use a variety of approaches and resources to collect, organize, analyze, and retain information. Students are encouraged to become critical thinkers who use critical and analytical thinking to solve problems and are able to transfer knowledge to real-world problems. Students are expected to be effective communicators who speak and write clearly.
The curriculum also encourages students to treat themselves and others with respect, to work within a variety of groups to achieve goals, and to be responsible individuals who demonstrate ethical behavior and accept responsibility for their actions. Students should also demonstrate positive choices and decision-making for their physical and emotional health.

Chalk Talk: The Common Application
Most students these days apply to several colleges, which means they have to fill out several applications, which can take a lot of time and effort. The Common Application is an attempt to solve this problem by providing one application that can be sent to multiple colleges. There are many benefits to this, such as the ease it provides; the Common App. tracks deadlines, application status, and required additional materials, all in one place, which is a help to students. The Common App. requires one essay, with one or two possible additional short essays. Some colleges will require additional essays, called Supplements, which can add up to a lot of work applicants. The Common App. is longer than many applications available on colleges’ websites, but the additional information given by the Common App. is beneficial for students. And some colleges have begun to use the Common App. exclusively. Some colleges will waive their application fee if students use the college’s online application, which can be a real help, since application fees can become prohibitive. So, though there are many benefits to the Common App., there are also drawbacks.
