Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burkburnett District Curriculum
In the Language Arts curriculum, the students at Burkburnett Independent School District begin the study of literature. Picture books are used to introduce the subject, as students begin to associate the items in a picture with the words on a page. They are able to then progress to smaller chapter books as they explore setting, characters and other facets of understanding what they read. Through the use of book reports the students learn how to share what they have read with other students. This well-rounded curriculum helps students discover ways to become life-long readers.
The Math curriculum at Burkburnett Independent School District introduces students to a variety of problem-solving techniques. In the early grades, students use visualization and manipulation to learn how to place objects in sets and then how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. As they advance through school they learn how to use these skills to complete algebraic formulas and begin the study of statistics. To round out their education in problem-solving, students then are able to complete classes in geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.

Chalk Talk: Characteristics of Development in Adolescence
The teen years can be a time of great change. Parents need to know what these changes are so they know when to show concern. Physically, teens will go through rapid physical changes with variations that are due to genetics, the environment and health. During this time there will be distinction between male and female in size, strength and the age of the growth. This is also a time to watch for issues such as eating disorders, sexual experimentation and drug use. Social allegiances will begin to turn more and more to friends and less to parents and teens begin to interact socially without parents overseeing them. Finally, teens are able to reason more and can make choices ethically and morally, even though some of these choices will be affected by their social circles. With these guidelines in mind, parents can see that their teens are facing many changes that can leave them confused. Because of this parents need to leave the lines of communication open.
