Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burlington District Curriculum
In the Writing program, students are expected to develop writing skills in an ever-advancing way. There is ongoing assessment for your child’s writing. Standards guiding the use of language, organization of essays, and the development of research skills are emphasized. Writing is a very important part of the curriculum and it is important that your child meet the standards. The teachers are trying to have regular writing and assessment evidenced in their classrooms.
In Social Studies, the students are taught history, geography, economics, government and culture. Opportunities to conduct research in all these areas is emphasized. As the grades progress the students learn ever more sophisticated material. There is a lot of difference from school to school as to exactly what is taught in social studies but a common core of understandings exists. Students increase their depth of knowledge in a range of concepts dealing with governmental and economic systems, institutions, and societal change.
