Burnaby District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs) were developed for K-12 students by the BC Ministry of Education in order to maintain a standard of learning at the provincial level. The Ministry of Education details the expected minimum skill set and observable learning standards for students throughout all school districts in British Columbia. Students are assessed through a range of formal and informal assessments and projects to determine their achievement level at reaching all the standards.

We currently cover the following Burnaby-area school district: Burnaby School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burnaby District Curriculum

The Prescribed Learning Outcomes follow a sequential pattern of building from the fundamentals to more complex work in each subject. Each subject is broken down into its major topics, for example, in Math students study numerical operations, algebra, geometry and other topics or in Science students focus on earth sciences, biology, physics and chemistry. Within each strand of the curriculum, there are detailed learning objectives to ensure student success.

The Ministry of Education is flexible in the delivery format for each individual school district in BC. School administrators can shape the curriculum as needed in order to fit their students’ specific needs, or in the case of the Ministry not developing a curriculum for a particular subject, local authorities are allowed to create their own. Additionally, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs are approved by the Ministry of Education to be administered in schools as necessary.

Chalk Talk: Take Your Time With Your Career Path

As they enter today’s competitive work force, many secondary students may not realize that a career path does not necessarily need to be set in stone – it’s never too late to change direction. However, regular discussions with career counselors provided in most secondary educational institutions are there for just that purpose: To get the ball rolling in a realistic direction. While excellence in a particular field or subject may provide guidance toward realistic career goals as they look toward potential universities and/or trade schools, an Associate’s Degree or Certificate Program in a field of general study may still open the door for continuing education. Many students feel pressured to decide early, but there are plenty of educational options for those who can’t yet decide.
