Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Byram District Curriculum

The writing curriculum at Byram Schools includes children writing narratives, opinions, informational works, plus they use these skills in each subject, even mathematics. In middle school, the students build their writing toolboxes as they learn how to use figurative language and how to write persuasively. When these students graduate from high school they have the skills and the knowledge to become great writers wherever their lives may take them.

Byram Schools use a hands-on approach to teaching mathematics. This is done through charts, manipulatives, and games. The early educational years use Singapore math to create a world of higher thinkers. This teaching style continues into intermediate and middle school as the students increase their knowledge of equations, fractions, negative numbers and geometry. In high school the students then are prepared to face the advanced mathematics that faces them. This includes classes in geometry, algebra, trigonometry and calculus.

Chalk Talk: How to Help A Teen Succeed

The teenager’s world can seem like an obstacle course to many teens. There are some things that can be done to help them succeed. To be successful, teens need to realize that they are responsible for their actions. Instead of blaming others, help them see that they need to look at themselves to see where things could have been different. Next, help then to keep their eyes on their life goal. This can act as their roadmap for times when they get lost. Teens also need to learn how to prioritize, to see what is most important and then find the way to complete it. Finally, listen to the teen. When they feel that what they have to say is important they will then see the importance in listening to others.
