Byron District and Curriculum
Byron Public Schools is a comprehensive K-12 school district. The motto of the district is to learn, share, innovate, and inspire. There is a community-based approach to achieving this motto. Teachers, administrators, and staff members work closely with each child to ensure he or she has the support they need to reach their potential. Additionally, school personnel seek to involve parents and family members to build an even stronger system of support for students. This readiness for the next step in students’ lives also includes character education programs that promote the development of strong communication skills, appreciation for diversity, and a strong work ethic.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Byron District Curriculum
Middle school students in Byron learn skills needed to effectively read literature as part of the English language arts curriculum. Learners analyze literary text, noting the intent of the author as well as his or her point of view on a specific subject. Students acquire the ability to cite textual evidence to support their analyses as well. Much work is also done regarding identification of a story’s theme. Students evaluate the central ideas and supporting details of a text, and analyze how those details help the author develop the theme.

Parabolas are introduced, with learners developing the skills needed to identify lines of symmetry, vertices, and intercepts. Learners study also asymptotes. Chalk Talk: Value of After-School Programs
Districts throughout the country offer after-school programming for their students. Whether academic in nature, or just a time to have fun and play games, after-school programs offer children a variety of benefits. On the academic side, students have an opportunity to catch up on work or learn a new skill. Children can expand their knowledge by taking part in an activity in a subject with which they are unfamiliar. Likewise, after-school activities open up opportunities for kids to interact with their peers. The social growth facilitated by these programs helps children be prepared for the future, while also fostering an improved school community in the present. And, of course, after-school programs keep kids safe, off the streets, and out of trouble.
