Caledonia District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The education which students in Caledonia receive stems from a model which lays out standards for learning on the K-12 continuum so that student learning is logically organized and delivered. The Ontario Curriculum is used in all districts; it provides the framework for core subjects, enrichment subjects, and the more extensive programs available to students such as Language Immersion or Advanced Placement. The district has adopted a proactive approach to education in order to quickly adapt to the changing needs of students and the changing demands of the modern world. Innovative learning programs have been implemented that include rigorous learning experiences in core areas, and foster the growth of an appreciation for learning.
We currently cover the following Caledonia-area school districts: Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic School District Board and Grand Erie School District Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Caledonia District Curriculum
The elementary curriculum provides students with the building blocks of learning in Math, Science, and English as students are introduced to topics at grade-appropriate levels. The Math curriculum requires that students learn about measurement and ways of analyzing data, and that they develop operational skills and some basic proportional reasoning. The secondary curriculum for Math begins with a Foundations or Principles of Math course which requires students to learn about algebra, geometry, and data analysis. In Science, students learn about biology, earth and environmental science, and concepts in physical science.
English is the students introduction to the humanities, and teaches students essentials for reading, writing, and communicating which are used in all subjects. One focus is on reading for understanding and the development of written expression that uses analytic and reflective thinking. Another area of emphasis is critical writing and the development of a process approach that allows time to brainstorm, draft, edit and revise, and then prepare for a presentation.

Chalk Talk: Organizational Skills
Students can become overwhelmed with assignments, as they become older. By learning a few organizational skills, they can begin to feel more assured with themselves. Parents can introduce them to check lists. This can include the steps that are needed for a research project, or their daily assignments, but as they complete each item they can check it off and feel a sense of accomplishment. Set up a study area where they can go to each day. It should be quiet and be supplied with all the materials they may need. Along with this set up a certain time every day when the child should be studying. Generally, this is best if the child is given time after school to unwind. Even if there are not any assignments, encourage them to take this time to review what they learned that day. Finally, before they go to bed, the child should pack their book bag for the next day and set out their clothes and accessories for the next day. These organizational skills will not only help them at the present time but throughout their lives.
