Cambridge District and Curriculum

In 2010, the Maryland State Board of Education decided to adopt the Common Core State Standards for both Mathematics and English & Language Arts. These rigorous evidence based standards help ensure that students are receiving the same quality education across state lines and from school to school. These standards have now been adopted by more than 40 states. In addition to the Common Core Standards the District is implementing the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Initiative (STEM). STEM ensures that students are be prepared for the growing number of jobs that are required in the fields of engineering and technology.

We currently cover the following Cambridge-area school district: Dorcester County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cambridge District Curriculum

In Language Arts, the students study increasingly complex reading selections including nonfiction, and adding more text analysis to the program. At all grade levels, the new standards
are geared toward the improvement of writing skills including narration, exposition, and argument forms. Elementary students receive
daily instruction in writing styles and grammar. Students also start a writing portfolio that will go with them through elementary
school. Middle school students use a curriculum for Language Arts that includes a gradual transition to Common Core. Opportunities for analytic thought
are added to the reading and in writing students are tasked with more attention to persuasive, expository and narrative writing styles.
At the high school level, the curriculum includes the reading of complex text with students proving spoken and written analyses of the material.
