The schools in Campbell River use the curriculum designed by the Ministry of Education which is intended as a framework for expected learning outcomes in the subjects. The Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs) describe what it is that students should be able to do based on subject-area instruction. The PLOs are designed to prepare students for 21st century academic and professional life. During their school years, students will take province-wide assessments that are based on these learning expectations laid out in the curriculum.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Campbell River District Curriculum

The Prescribed Learning Outcomes are designed to prepare students for 21st century academic and professional life. An emphasis is placed on core academics such as critical reading, writing, mathematical problem-solving, and scientific inquiry. Students learn how to collect and organize information such that they can effectively summarize their findings in written form. As part of their analyses, they learn to incorporate information from various sources to develop a deeper connection between the source material and the assigned reading.

Another key skill that students can obtain during their education is the learning of another language. Students can become bilingual and biliterate through immersion programs or a long course of study in a chosen language. They engage in learning on an interpretive level, where students focus on comprehending information that they read and which is spoken to them. In the presentational mode, language learners convey messages to groups of people. This usually involves speaking to a group or providing written information.

Chalk Talk: Learning Goals of the Health and Career Education Curriculum

The health and career education curriculum is designed to inform students about the value of personal health and wellness. Students learn about various body systems and how they work individually and collaboratively. They investigate the positive impacts that exercise and fitness have on body systems, noting how cardiovascular, muscle, and skeletal health can be improved through daily exercise. Nutrition is a large component of the health curriculum as well. Students learn what makes for an appropriate diet, and also identify foods that should be avoided. Responsible health behaviors are identified, with students developing a plan for improving their physical health and maintaining that level of health for the long-term. Common health issues are noted, and students devise plans for preventing, detecting, and seeking treatment for illnesses and injuries. An analysis of the various factors that influence health is undertaken as well. Students identify common problems that arise in childhood and adolescence that can negatively impact one’s wellness, such as accidents on the playground or sports injuries.
