Elementary school learners acquire the ability to name numbers and correctly recall sequences of numbers. Students learn about basic numerical operations, such as addition and subtraction, with a study of multiplication and division coming in later grades. Learners work with base-ten, including exploration of double-digit numbers in order to get a grasp of the concept of place value.

The economics strand of the curriculum introduces students to financial literacy skills. Learners explore topics like the stock market and clarify the role that banking and investment plays in the health and vitality of the American economy. Chalk Talk: Tips for Finding Scholarships

Applying for college scholarships is a long and sometimes tedious process, but one that will reap students financial benefits if they approach it in the right way. There are thousands of scholarships available nationwide, from those that are locally based to those that are offered by huge, multi-national corporations. Many colleges and universities offer special scholarships to area residents, while state and federal governments also offer financial aid opportunities. Often, the first step in the scholarship application process is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), because many scholarships require that financial information in order to determine their winners. Next, it is important to contact local entities, including any educational foundations, to determine if any local scholarships are available. For students still in high school, the guidance department is an excellent resource for finding scholarships that are appropriate. Inquiries should also be made to the financial aid office at the college or university of choice, as they can point students toward available scholarships as well.
