Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canandaigua District Curriculum
The curriculum in all the public schools in the Canandaigua City School District is mapped to the Common Core Curriculum approved by the New York State Board of Regents. In addition to academics, the district is committed to providing an education that includes technology use in terms of both student access and classroom instruction. The English and Language Arts program is focused on helping students learn to read, write, speak and listen in fluent English. At the youngest grades students are introduced to both informational text and literature in an effort to provide students with the type of literacy that will benefit them in advanced education and in their careers.
In Mathematics, students learn the basics of computation including basic arithmetic, geometry, algebra, statistics and probability. There is a measurement and data strand in the elementary curriculum. Students learn how to represent and interpret data, and explore geometric measurements such as surface area. The Math curriculum is progressive and intensive, providing students with the skills they need to be mathematically literate.
