Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canyon District Curriculum
Canyon Schools includes the Social Studies curriculum into each student's life. The manner in which the government of the United States was established is examined. The curriculum ends with an exploration of the Civil War era, in which students learn about various causes of the war, including states’ rights issues, disputes over federalism, and territorialism. The civics strand encourages student understanding of why we have laws, and how those laws protect people and ensure individual liberties. Students learn the role of citizens in a democracy as well, and come to appreciate what it means to be an active and engaged member of society.
The writing curriculum is used every day with students at Canyon Schools. They begin by placing ideas upon paper by drawing pictures, then they learn to replace these pictures with words. By middle school they have learned some of the genre they will continue to use such as informational, essays, short stories and more. In high school, this foundation is expanded upon by showing students how to use them in their lives, such as in college or job applications.

Chalk Talk: Encouraging Readers
When children show an interest in books or reading, one of the best things to do is to help them with this interest. The first thing to do is to touch base with the child's teacher so an understanding can be made as to how he, or she, approaches instruction. Also see what is recommended to help benefit the child's reading. Next, set up a time every day when the entire family spends time reading. During this time, the child can spend the time reading with an adult. Encourage the child to use the pictures to help understand the meaning on the reading. With these hints, the child and the parent may both show an increased interest in reading.
