Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carbondale District Curriculum

The school’s curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core Standards in English language and mathematics. In English language arts, the curriculum emphasizes the reading of nonfiction and complex texts and the writing of analytical essays. Students gather information and use evidence to support their claims while also expanding their vocabularies. This encourages students to be critical readers and writers.

In mathematics classes, the curriculum focuses on key topics in depth so that basic concepts are mastered before moving on to more advanced topics. Algebraic patterning and relationships, geometry and measurement, and data analysis are emphasized. The hope is that students will be able to apply their math skills to real-world problems and challenges. The science curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards, which are rigorous and intended to provide students with the skills and processes of observation, hypothesis testing, reporting on findings and other elements of the scientific process.

Chalk Talk: What Does the Transcript Tell Colleges?

The most important piece of a college application is the transcript for two primary reasons. One, the transcript gives an applicant’s GPA, though that GPA is tempered by course selection, and Two, the rigor of the applicant’s course selection. GPA can be weighted or unweighted. Weighted means that more credit is given for some classes, usually Advanced Placement or Honors classes. This is a misleading idea because colleges are going to unweight and reconfigure GPA however they want. They might ignore certain classes, as well. The rigor of the course selection has a lot to do with how the college looks at the transcript. A student who has a very high GPA in fairly non-rigorous classes isn’t going to be considered as strongly as a student with a high GPA in rigorous classes. A college profile accompanies the transcript. This document tells the college what courses are offered, which helps them determine what constitutes a rigorous course selection for a particular school.
