Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carencro District Curriculum

The Lafayette Parish School District has implemented the state mandated Common Core Curriculum for use within district schools. Currently, Common Core is used for curriculum standards in English and Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. In English and Language Arts, students learn to read, write, and speak using correct grammar and grade appropriate use of complex conventions of speaking and writing. English literacy is reinforced by the application of a common literacy standard across all other academic disciplines. Students also learn how to distinguish the differences between formal and informal communications.

In mathematics, the focus is on building a cohesive mastery of core math subjects starting at the earliest grades and extending into high school. Core math subjects include computational skills, algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, and measurement. This concentration on a finite number of subjects allows students to develop a deeper understanding of basic math which they can then apply to more difficult math problems.
