Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carlinville District Curriculum
In math classes, students learn how and why the math works. They still memorize formulas, but they spend more time understanding each mathematical concept and using it in practical applications. In science classes, students learn to evaluate and study the world around them in rigorous, controlled experiments. They also learn how to design experiments and track their observations so that they can present their scientific findings. Lessons are applied to real-world situation whenever possible.
In humanities classes, students learn how to think critically and logically about the texts they read. They study the decisions and actions of the past to understand how those affected the present. They also read a range of types of texts in a variety of formats, develop opinions and theses, and gather evidence to support those opinions. They write analytical essays and make oral presentations to ensure that they are effective communicators in a variety of formats. They also write creatively and reflectively so they learn how to write for multiple purposes.

Chalk Talk: Public Universities
The primary difference between a public and private university is the way each is funded. Public universities are primarily funded by the state, whereas private universities are primarily tuition driven. Because of this, public universities tend to have significantly lower tuition rates than private ones. They also offer an even lower tuition to students who live in the state. Also, public universities are mandated by the state to accept a certain percentage of in-state students, which makes the acceptance rate for in-state students higher. In general, public universities are easier to get into, but there are a few that are quite selective. They also are often larger than private ones, though there are plenty of small public colleges.
