Chalk Talk: Quick Tips for the SAT and ACT

As students prepare to take the SAT and ACT, they must keep in mind that both tests require not just academic knowledge, but the application of that knowledge to complex problems. In order to best demonstrate what they know and are able to do, students must prepare well in advance and make good decisions during the examinations themselves. For example, some students feel the need to rush through each section of the test for fear they will not have time to complete it. However, working at a comfortable pace is more beneficial. To improve one’s use of time, it is advisable to answer the easiest questions first and come back to the more difficult questions later to ensure they don’t get stuck on a difficult question and neglect the rest of the section. Also, on difficult questions, taking the time to eliminate incorrect possibilities can leave them with just one or two answers from which to choose, which improves their chances of selecting the right answer. And as always, test-takers need to read all directions and questions very carefully in order to minimize mistakes.
