Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carlsbad District Curriculum

Common Core provides educational standards in Mathematics and English and Language Arts (ELA) across the state. In English and Language Arts students focus on learning reading, writing, speaking and listening. The curriculum introduces students to both informational text and literature so that students are prepared for the type of reading they will need in their career goals. Both critical thinking and analysis are emphasized for reading comprehension and writing.

In Math, students spend a concentrated time learning the fundamentals of math subjects including computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. The focus is on students becoming fluent in math and being able to apply what they have learned to higher math and to math problems they will encounter as adults. In Science, students focus on the process of scientific discovery, forming and testing hypotheses and learning through discovery in topics like biology, chemistry and physics, and environmental and earth science.
