The district believes in a “growth mindset,” which holds that an individual can best develop his/her abilities through hard work and experience, as opposed to simply relying on one’s innate abilities. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carrboro District Curriculum

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools have developed and posted an extensive “Academics FAQ” that provides parents and students with information on various aspects of the district’s curriculum and other academic-related services. The first question asks what the district’s curriculum is and explains that the district uses the Common Core State Standards, which align the Common Core and North Carolina Essential standards as well as describes what academic standards are—they outline the skills and concepts students should be able to acquire.

In the FAQ, it is also explained how the Core Secondary Math Pathways are used to prepare students for college and their careers, with rigorous content that requires students to think critically. The district also informs parents on why it is beneficial for their children to take AP courses in high school and how they are exposed to college-level material in these classes. College and career readiness is a common theme in the learning, and the district explains that this means that students are ready to be successful in postsecondary institutions.

Chalk Talk: Student Feedback for Students in the Middle

It is important to provide feedback on students’ performance, which can help explain the grades they received. The teacher comments should describe some things the student did well and what he/she could improve upon. Following is an example of teacher feedback on a middle schooler who received a cumulative grade of a ‘C’ on a social studies unit. During this unit, each student has completed several projects. The purpose of this unit was not only for the students to learn about their countries—as well as others—but also to work on their writing, research, and presentation skills. [Student’s name] has tremendously improved his summarization and organization skills in his writing, and this is reflected in his most recent pieces of writing. He sometimes has trouble following directions, leading to difficulties in answering test questions and responding accurately to essay prompts.
