Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carrollton District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum begins by showing students how combinations of numbers are related to other numbers. They also learn how to count both forward and backward. As students’ progress in their education they learn how to solve a problem using multiple methods and how to deal with money, including how to combine coins to create a specific quantity. Each of these skills are built onto until students are able to advance to high school where they can continue their mathematics education.

Students are introduced to the Science curriculum by exploring the world around them. They look at the seasons, plants and animals. They are then introduced to more abstract ideas, such as magnetic poles. Through their education students learn how to classify items through observation and how to discuss changes that occur either when manipulated or when left alone. They also learn how to be safe when making exploration, either in the field or in the lab.

Chalk Talk: How to Work-Out the Entire Brain

Children that are able to use all of the brain have the ability to succeed in more aspects of life than those that focus on right or left brain. To help a child build a stronger, more balanced brain, parents can encourage many easy-to-do activities with the child. First, any game that encourages a child to use their imagination is ideal. Allow a child to take you on an imaginary voyage or play a game that the child has thought of. Another idea is to ask the child what if questions, such as what if you could fly like a bird. Another activity that helps with focus and thinking is to take a yoga class with a child. Yoga breathing increases the oxygen levels to the brain. Any activity that requires a child to cross the middle of the body, such as juggling or hitting the left knee with the right hand.
