Carson City District and Curriculum
The Nevada Department of Education has worked diligently to develop high standards in Mathematics, Science, and Language Arts that are measurable and effective. State curriculum is supplemented by the national Common Core State Standards curriculum. These curricular frameworks provide the grade-level learning expectations which students should meet and are aligned to assessments in core subjects to ensure that students are achieving the standards.
We currently cover the following Carson City-area school district: Carson City School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carson City District Curriculum
Mathematics courses are designed to help students understand the nature of mathematics and how it relates to real-world applications. Elementary students practice measuring skills, math operations like addition, division, and using fractions, and learn geometry and algebra as an integrated part of their math curriculum. This prepares them as high school students to understand more sophisticated math principles.
Language Arts learning includes the basics like reading, writing, and grammar, but the Common Core State Standards have a particular focus on understanding and applying informational texts to learning. Even as early as first and second grade, students are introduced to glossaries, tables of contents, and following written instructions. In high school, students are expected to use informational texts as a basis for learning in other subjects like science and engineering, mathematics, history, social studies, and geography.

Chalk Talk: Building Communication Skills
Listening and talking. Reading and writing. These are the keys to building successful communication skills, but the truth is that they seem much simpler on paper than they are in reality. So, how can you get your child practicing and improving these skills? First, try reading aloud to him or her, and then asking questions about the details of the story you are reading. Then flip the situation—have your student read to you, then ask you questions! This will not only get them paying more attention to their reading, but will also help them form critical thinking skills, understand how questions are formed, and consider what kind of information is important. Also, remember that students understand priorities in life based on the behaviors their parents model. Getting children interested in reading can be as easy as sitting down with a book yourself.
