Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carthage District Curriculum

In addition to academic rigor, the schools offer many extracurricular activities for students, from sports to arts to music offerings. Students can join or even found special interest clubs to further their engagement. Active, involved students are more likely to be active, involved citizens who seek out knowledge and success in their own lives. The hope is that all students will take advantage of the opportunities for success that are offered to them in their schools.

The curriculum of Carthage High School stresses critical thinking and critical reading skills. In mathematics classes, students learn the whys and hows of the math, as opposed to just memorizing formulas. In science classes, students explore the physical and natural world and move on to more advanced engineering problems. A focus on real-world applications is stressed in all classes so that students can relate.

Chalk Talk: Writing Center

College can seem overwhelming to new students. The personal responsibility required along with the heavy workload can be crushing, and does lead to the freshman year having the highest number of dropouts. There are things that can mitigate these difficulties, though. Every college has some sort of support structure in place, from heavy, mandated support like note takers and accommodations, to more general support. A college student’s best friend is the Writing Center. This is a place a student can take written assignments for help. Most colleges have a math equivalent. In addition to writing help, there are often tutors available. Many of these tutors have taken the same classes they’re tutoring in, so they have invaluable insights into the work, the professors, etc. Of course, the instructors, themselves, are the best resource to seek out.
