Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cedarsburg District Curriculum
Cedarsburg’s English language arts curriculum is built upon the Common Core State Standards. Middle school students participate in activities foster the development of skills that allow for improved reading of informational texts. Learners work on analyzing documents to determine their central meaning and supporting ideas. There is also a focus on how authors present ideas and elaborate on them. Likewise, students examine how authors construct texts, including how sentences, paragraphs, and chapters contribute to the overall development of the author’s ideas. Learners also become adept at identifying the manner in which an author conveys his or her viewpoint in the text.
The high school family and consumer sciences curriculum helps Cedarsburg students develop an understanding of what it means to be an effective decision-maker, communicator, worker, and family member. Specifically, learners explore various types of information sources that can help or hinder the decision making process. Evaluating sources for validity is an important skill acquired as part of the curriculum. Students also identify the consequences of making a decision on various levels, including for themselves, their family, and their community.

Chalk Talk: P.E. Helps Students Develop in Many Ways
Physical education classes are much more than an opportunity for kids to blow off steam and learn new games. Instead, P.E. helps students foster valuable skills like self-control, goal setting, and self-discipline. In the context of play, students can develop improved communication skills and leadership skills, as well as develop a greater appreciation for the input and performance of others. P.E. classes further students’ social skills as well, with many opportunities for kids to interact with one another while having fun. These improved relationships with peers can lead to better social and emotional functioning. There are academic benefits to P.E. courses as well. Students that are engaged in physical education courses show a greater capacity for focus and concentration in traditional classrooms.
