Channelview District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Channelview Independent School District offers students the tools they need to succeed by integrating educators’ experience and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The TEKS provides the series of standards that students should meet in each subject but does not prescribe how individual teachers should deliver these lessons to their students. By this design, all students receive the highest quality standards and an educational experience more tailored to their learning style.

We currently cover the following Channelview-area school district: Channelview Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Channelview District Curriculum

Social Studies at Channelview Schools provide students many opportunities to see how this subject is woven into their lives. In the elementary school students begin to complete projects when they create community maps of their areas and they participate in mock elections and postcard exchanges with other students across the country. This gives a foundation for the students to explore the world around them and help them to realize how they are connected to others.

The reading curriculum at Channelview Schools is implemented by a Reader’s Workshop in the elementary years. During this time, students read independently and in groups. They also share their reading experiences with other through reports, pictures or sharing orally. The abilities that are gained in these early years help the students learn the different literary elements. It also helps them when they begin to use specific books to help reinforce a genre or an element. The students read “A Christmas Carol” to study drama and “Icarus and Daedalus” to study mythology.

Chalk Talk: Reading With Children

When parents take time to read with their children both parties grow. Just by taking the time, the relationship between the parent and child will grow. Plus the child can help increase vocabulary, comprehension of story structure, and correct grammar. Some ideas for making this time profitable including becoming familiar with the story first. By looking through the stories available, this way a book can be chosen that will excite the parent and the child. Next, when reading the book make sure the excitement shows. This can be done through reading with expression and by creating voices for different characters. Allow the children to ask questions as the story progresses. Take the time to answer the questions and to clarify any words that are unknown to the child. All of these steps help with understanding with the children and will show them that reading and knowledge is important.
