Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chapel Hill District Curriculum
The standards for English Language Arts are categorized by reading, writing, speaking and listening, language, media and technology. Each category shares the same weight of importance and each category blends together as part of the integral standards. The reading standards require students to fully comprehend reading material in each grade, so as they move through the grades, they are equipped to gain more from whatever they read and have a better understanding of reading strategies as they read more advanced material.
The writing standard is geared towards student’s ability to write logically based on substantive claims, good reasoning, and appopriate evidence. Research is also emphasized throughout the writing standards, highlighting levels of written arguments, informational texts and narratives at all grade levels. Speaking and listening standards require that students’ understand increasingly complex information, ideas, and evidence through listening and speaking as well as through media.

Chalk Talk: Choosing A College
Choosing a college begins with doing some honest, self-searching about why you want to go, what you want out of life, what your strengths and weaknesses are. Spend some time asking your parents, teachers and peers that know you best for guidance on obtaining the answers to some of these tough questions. Choosing the right college takes time and thoughtfulness. And keep in mind in your search, that choosing a college because that’s where your friends are going, or where it ranks doesn’t take into account what’s most important - what’s the best fit for you.
