Charlestown District and Curriculum

The Chariho Regional School District uses Common Core Standards for Math and Language Arts and the Grade Level Expectations developed by the Department of Education for other core subjects. These frameworks lay out the various skills, knowledge and concepts that students should learn in each subject and the higher order goals associated with each subject. By high school, many critical thinking skills are developed and honed in the core subjects.

We currently cover the following Charlestown-area school district: Chariho Regional School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Charlestown District Curriculum

The curriculum in Language Arts describes the yearly goals for reading, writing, communicating, media viewing, and research skills. In reading, students are supposed to be able to analyze meaning, derive meaning from context, recognize bias and purpose in texts, be able to evaluate the quality of resources, and be able to respond to different types of texts in writing. The goal is a high level of critical thinking applied to texts that can be used in other academic courses and are required for success in college.

The writing curriculum has become a significant part of the Language Arts curriculum. Students are expected to respond to the literary and non-fiction texts they read, but also need to learn how to write in persuasive, informational, and narrative formats as well. They are expected to learn the steps to writing such as different ways of outlining, how to provide appropriate support for a point and make strong arguments, and how to edit and revise their work according to standard language conventions.

Chalk Talk: What Is Integrated Learning?

Integrated learning is a term used to describe the ways that two subjects can be combined within one lesson or course in an integrated fashion. It is a popular mode of teaching because it can help tie together areas of learning and increase the actual relevance of each for students. For instance, a high school project on the effects of the census in government decision-making can help students understand the real impact of statistics in our lives. Also, the cross-curricular focus on reading and writing due to how these skills are used in all subjects is a way that subjects are integrated. Or, the popularity of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs that give students the chance to work on topics like robotics or computer programming, speaks to the effectiveness of integrated areas of study.
