Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Charlottesville District Curriculum

The students at Charlottesville City Schools begin their Science education by learning about the world that they know, including shadows and the seasons of the year. They expand their areas of exploration as they progress through school. They cover areas such as earth and space, living systems, matter so when they reach high school they can study more about the areas they have enjoyed including chemistry or biology.

The Reading curriculum at CCS integrates reading throughout their entire curriculum. To assist in this the students use technology, such as Kindles, Smartpens, and iPods. They also use Accelerated Reader and various reading websites to help students progress in their reading from the level they begin. In high school, they are presented with classes to further their love of literature, like classes in Shakespeare, and medieval literature.

Keeping Informed: Recent Charlottesville Educational News

  • National Merit Scholars - Many students from Charlottesville High School are semi-finalists and commended students in the National Merit Scholarship program. The semi-finalists are eligible to be finalists and to receive scholarships. A commended title shows that these students have proven themselves exceptional academically. To achieve these honors these students performed outstandingly on the previous year’s tests.
  • Virginia Theater Association Competition - At the recent Virginia Theater Association Competition, Charlottesville High School Theatre competed against fifty schools. They performed a one-act student-written play and won Honorable Mention for Best Play and Technical merit Award for Set Design. Other students won awards in the areas of Technical Olympics and All-Star Cast Member honors.
  • South Central Senior Regional Orchestra - Musicians from Charlottesville High School were named to the South Central Senior Regional Orchestra. These students will perform with this orchestra at future events throughout the state and this opportunity will provide the students with valuable learning in performance skills and competitive expectations.
