Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Charlottesville District Curriculum

The students at Charlottesville City Schools begin their Science education by learning about the world that they know, including shadows and the seasons of the year. They expand their areas of exploration as they progress through school. They cover areas such as earth and space, living systems, matter so when they reach high school they can study more about the areas they have enjoyed including chemistry or biology.

The Reading curriculum at CCS integrates reading throughout their entire curriculum. To assist in this the students use technology, such as Kindles, Smartpens, and iPods. They also use Accelerated Reader and various reading websites to help students progress in their reading from the level they begin. In high school, they are presented with classes to further their love of literature, like classes in Shakespeare, and medieval literature.

Chalk Talk: Science for Five and Six-Year Olds

Young children love to explore the world around them. This love helps them become natural scientists. With a little guidance, these young learners can do simple experiments while playing or in class. This helps them to answer questions they ask like how or why. With a little urging they can also learn to word a simple hypothesis and then see if their theory is correct or not, and why. These young explorers can learn to appreciate science with a little guidance from their family.
