The mission of the School District of the Chathams is to offer educational programs that are up-to-date, safe, and suitable to meet the various needs of its student population. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chatham Borough District Curriculum

The district uses targeted instruction to ensure students receive the attention and specialized instruction they need to thrive in their elementary years and which will prepare them for the years ahead. Also, the district has designed a technology activity template, along with a sample version of that template and a sample lesson plan incorporating the technology standards so that teachers and students can get used to the new expectations. The elementary students are expected to gain familiarity with how to use computers and other technology devices, and by middle school, students are learning about word processing and databases.

The curriculum teaches key concepts and investigates them thoroughly so that students understand them well. This gives students a firm foundation on which to build. Critical thinking, critical reading, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills are all taught so that students are well-prepared for life beyond high school. These lessons are also applied to real-world situations, so that students can relate to what they have learned, instead of focusing on abstract concepts which are easily forgotten.

Chalk Talk: Improving Parent-Teacher Communication

Just as we want our children to be prepared for a new school, parents should prepare themselves for teacher conferences. If you want to avoid the “deer in headlights” feeling when you hear unexpected news at a parent-teacher conference, here are a few things you can do to get the most out of your next school meeting. First, talk to your child beforehand to get his perspective on their own progress. This valuable conversation will give you some idea of what to expect and tell you if your child is in tune to his own progress. Secondly, start with the right attitude. Remember your child’s teacher is on your side. Start with a compliment; then address your questions or concerns. This will help start the year off on the right foot. Lastly, follow up. If you and the teacher agree on areas of improvement, maintaining communication and putting goals in place will let your child know that you are working as a team to ensure your child’s success. This will motivate your child and ensure further communication will go even more smoothly.
