Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cheraw District Curriculum
Chesterfield County School District begins instruction with the foundational knowledge needed to grow in each subject. In Math, the focus is on numeracy, operational ability, mental math, patterns and relationships, shapes and measurement, and quantitative data. In English, the fundamentals of reading comprehension and writing skills are developed. Vocabulary and sight word recognition are emphasized. Fluency is also a key goal and students are expected to read a wide range of books and think critically about them.
Chesterfield’s high schools offer several levels and types of courses, including honors, college prep, AP, dual credit, and Career and Technology Education (CATE) courses. Students are encouraged to take CATE courses that align with careers they may be interested in pursuing in the future. Chalk Talk: Children’s Literature Spotlight: Alphabet Books for More Advanced Learners
Alphabet books may be thought to be extremely simple and designed for very young learners, but some books present the alphabet in a more complex and different manner. For example, the book “Antics!” is full of rich language, portraying the alphabet through the ants’ actions. “When Royals Wore Ruffles: A Funny & Fashionable Alphabet” uses the alphabet to introduce students to more sophisticated words. This is a particularly great book for girls, as they receive a lesson on fashion through the ages. Finally, “The Z Was Zapped”, written and illustrated by Chris van Allsburgh, presents the alphabet in a very unique way. Each “act” describes what happens to each letter in the form of a play.
