Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Childersburg District Curriculum

In Reading, the students are exposed to many types of novels and reading materials, both fiction and non-fiction. Focusing on true fluency and deeper comprehension, the teachers model and give the students plenty of practice. In order to develop the love of reading, the students in middle school have more freedom in choosing reading materials. Choices are given, along with accountability for what they are reading. Reading is taught in conjunction with writing so the students can continue to enhance their abilities, while at the same time increasing their appreciation for all works of literature.

The Math curriculum develops skills in problem-solving in all areas of the subject over the years. Topics in algebra, measurements and geometric thinking, data and quantitative analysis are started early and students explore these concepts with manipulatives and through real-life related experiences. In high school, students are able to perform more analytic work and develop reasoning and logical thinking as well.

Keeping Informed: Recent Childersburg Educational News

  • TigerFest - A yearly event that features fun for the sports teams of Childersburg schools and Talladega County, TigerFest has it all in entertainment! Great food, lots of vendors, inflatables for the children, a celebratory Alumni Tiger football game, ultimate frisbee fun, and to end it all: fireworks! Also, all of the cheerleaders and sports team are introduced.
  • Knowledge Tree - There is a special kind of tree at Childersburg Elementary. It looks like a lit up Christmas tree, but it is actually made of books! The books are stacked in a tree-like fashion and lights adorn the display. They have penned it the Tree of Knowledge, and it is quite a site to see by the students, teachers, staff, and parents. The books in the tree are also categorized by genre, and the students are learning about all kinds of great novels and books.
  • Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory - What a field trip! Students from Childersburg Middle School spent a weekend at Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory. Located on the coast of the state of Alabama, this activity center has plenty of hands-on activities, such as beach expeditions, dissecting sharks, salt marsh discovery, the study of plankton, and much more. In order for future 8th graders to be considered for the trip, they must have a love for science and demonstrate knowledge of scientific principles.
