Students explore the impacts of the post-Cold War era, including the sociopolitical changes that occurred throughout Europe after the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union. Students also explore the United States’ growing role in international affairs in the 1990s and 2000s. Terrorism is a primary topic of discussion as well. Chalk Talk: Benefits of Music Education
Students that participate in music courses – whether vocal or instrumental – reap a number of benefits. Music students demonstrate a higher capacity for concentration in the classroom, perhaps as a result of having to focus on the lyrics or notes that they are singing or playing. Additionally, studies show that music students outperform their peers on standardized tests in math and reading. These academic gains are seen across grade levels and socioeconomic groups. Music students are also found to have improved spatial and temporal reasoning skills. There are behavioral benefits as well. Research shows that as the number of music classes a student takes increases, the number of discipline referrals decreases.
