Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cibolo District Curriculum

The writing curriculum introduces students to a variety of genres. Students use the texts and reading material, both in and out of class. They then refer to these works as they begin to write essays, short stories, biographies and autobiographies. As they prepare for college, or a career, students will find many times when they will use these examples. When filling out applications, they will need to write well-constructed essays and they will need to reflect on their lives, in a short autobiography.

History, at Cibolo schools, shows students how different civilizations came to inhabit different areas of the world. They also combine what is taught in this class with other classes. When studying the Anglo-Saxon period, they may share some of what they have learned when reading Beowulf, or they may share the life they discovered in Canterbury Tales with the class when talking about Medieval times. Science class also enters the history curriculum as students discover how the scientific world has changed.

Chalk Talk: Simplifying College Applications

Completing college applications can be a daunting task. Instead of avoiding them, here are a few hints that can help make filling them out easier. First of all, look at the schools that the applications are from and then ask which of these schools would be a better fit for the student. After deciding on which ones to keep, create a timetable for each noting when the application is do, the required sections and when letters of recommendations are due. Next, decide who to choose for the recommendations. Let these people know the deadline, your full name, address and phone numbers. Provide them with two copies of the form, in case of errors, school’s name address and a stamped envelope. Finally, for the essay, make sure to state your strengths, without sounding too boastful. Include any awards, or extracurricular activities. Finally, have a parent or teacher proof the documents, take a deep breath and then mail the applications.
