Chalk Talk: Volunteerism Promotes Personal Growth
Many schools are now requiring students to participate in some kind of volunteerism as part of their studies. The benefits of such requirements are many. Students learn a great deal about both the community and themselves through community based, project learning. First, students that provide assistance to other people have improved self-esteem. Volunteerism also fosters personal growth. Secondly, students who volunteer their time gain an appreciation for what it means to be a member of a community, and develop a sense of pride with regard to their efforts to improve their surroundings. Lastly, studies show that people who volunteer experience reduced levels of stress. The joy one gets out of helping another person improves mood and one’s long-term outlook on life as well.
